Major Food Delivery Platforms in Southeast Asia: Where Battery Swapping Fits Electric Motorcycle Fleets

By: HelloSwap  |  2026-10-12

Southeast Asia's food delivery market brings together regional platforms, local operators and riders with different working arrangements. For electric motorcycle fleet owners, rental companies and energy operators, the opportunity depends on more than an app's popularity. Platform coverage, motorcycle access and rider routes determine where a battery swapping service can work—and which local partner can turn delivery demand into a reliable local operating business.

Southeast Asia Food Delivery Platforms at a Glance

Grab led the region by food delivery gross merchandise value in 2025, while ShopeeFood overtook foodpanda to become the second-largest platform.

Food Delivery Platforms in Six Southeast Asian Markets

Indonesia — GoFood, GrabFood and ShopeeFood

  • GoFood is Gojek's food delivery service. Its official coverage list includes Jabodetabek, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Yogyakarta, Bali and numerous other areas. Gojek also states that GoRide partners can accept GoFood and other service orders.

  • GrabFood provides instant and scheduled restaurant deliveries through Grab. Available restaurants and service hours depend on the destination and local restaurant operations.

  • ShopeeFood operates through Shopee/ShopeePay. Its official service-area list includes Jabodetabek, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Makassar, Bali and many additional locations.

The service mix matters for energy planning. A rider combining meals, parcels and passenger trips may travel beyond restaurant clusters, while a food-only group may work within a more concentrated area.

Gojek also describes specialist accounts restricted to a selected service and area. Confirm the proposed riders' account types and actual routes rather than assume every motorcycle follows the same daily pattern.

Thailand — GrabFood, LINE MAN, ShopeeFood and Robinhood

  • GrabFood publishes service areas across Bangkok and multiple provinces. Grab's April 2026 announcement includes SLEEK EV electric motorcycle rentals for delivery riders and EM Motor instalment purchases.

  • LINE MAN records expanding food delivery to all 77 provinces in 2021. Its motorcycle partnership with SLEEK EV involved the Supply Marketplace function, providing a specific programme reference for businesses researching rider access.

  • ShopeeFood lists service and rider-recruitment areas including Bangkok, surrounding provinces, Chiang Mai, Phuket and districts in other regions.

  • Robinhood describes its food delivery service as serving Bangkok and surrounding areas, giving it a more geographically focused operating footprint.

Rental and purchase programmes create different commercial discussions. A lessor may assess motorcycles, maintenance and energy together; individual purchasers need a separate adaptation and subscription offer.

An electric motorcycle programme does not automatically support battery swapping. Check the models involved and what the existing rental or financing arrangement already includes.

Vietnam — GrabFood, ShopeeFood, beFood and Xanh SM Ngon

  • GrabFood lists Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, Da Lat and other service areas. Availability follows the delivery address and accessible restaurants.

  • ShopeeFood's October 2026 rider information covers Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, with HUB and Non-HUB participation rules varying by city. Its rider news also lists an electric motorcycle recruitment campaign in Hanoi.

  • beFood's April 2026 guidance identifies Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as its principal operating areas and directs users to check local availability through the be app.

  • Xanh SM Ngon launched in Hanoi in June 2025 with an all-electric delivery proposition.

ShopeeFood's HUB areas can help identify a rider cohort, but station placement still needs measured pickup, delivery and replenishment routes.

For an already-electric operator, the opportunity is not necessarily conversion. A proposed service must fit its motorcycle specifications, existing battery arrangements and maintenance responsibilities.

Malaysia — GrabFood, foodpanda and ShopeeFood

  • GrabFood provides Malaysian food delivery services, with operating hours varying by location and restaurant. Selected cities support 24-hour service.

  • foodpanda lists Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Johor Bahru, Georgetown, Ipoh, Kuching and other locations in its official restaurant directory.

  • ShopeeFood identifies service areas including Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Penang, Perak, Melaka, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, Pahang, Kedah and Terengganu.

Rider requirements offer another useful distinction. foodpanda requires access to a motorcycle, a licence and road tax. ShopeeFood lists ownership among its requirements and requests registration and road-tax documents.

For an owner-focused service, explain adaptation costs, battery terms and technical support. A rental provider may instead evaluate a combined motorcycle-and-energy package. In either case, confirm platform eligibility and who has authority to modify the motorcycles before recruiting participants.

The Philippines — GrabFood, foodpanda and ShopeeFood

  • GrabFood covers most of Metro Manila and selected areas in Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Pampanga, Cebu, Bacolod and Davao. Its motorcycle partner onboarding requires registration and insurance documents.

  • foodpanda identifies Manila, Cebu, Davao, Bacolod and Iloilo among its service cities. Its merchant information states that it handles delivery operations and rider recruitment and management.

  • ShopeeFood began rolling out in Metro Manila on September 16, 2026, initially to selected cities and users.

For a local energy operator, the relevant demand is the work performed by a confirmed rider group—not the number of apps available. Measure participants' schedules, daily distance and service mix within one city or delivery corridor before committing sites or battery stock.

Singapore — GrabFood and foodpanda

  • GrabFood accepts motorcycle partners alongside bicycle, power-assisted bicycle and other delivery modes. Rented motorcycles require a rental agreement or authorisation, and motorcycle insurance must cover food and parcel delivery.

  • foodpanda also recruits across multiple delivery modes, including motorcycles and bicycles. Its total rider population therefore is not a single electric motorcycle fleet.

Motorcycle rental businesses offer another practical cooperation route. Tribecar's guidance updated in September 2026 permits electric motorcycle delivery work and includes battery swapping in the relevant rental arrangement.

For a rental-fleet project, involve the motorcycle owner in adaptation decisions. Confirm that the rental agreement permits the planned changes and that delivery insurance remains valid.

Where Battery Swapping Partnerships Can Start

Battery Swapping for Electric Two-Wheeler Delivery Fleets

Approach the Party That Can Commit the Required Assets

Rider recruitment, motorcycle supply, batteries and sites may sit with different businesses. The first discussion should address the resource the project needs most.

Partner

Potential contribution

Essential agreement

Platform rider operations team

Recruitment support and participation rules

Permissions, eligibility and programme approvals

Fleet owner or motorcycle lessor

Motorcycle supply, financing and maintenance

Authority to commit motorcycles and approve adaptation

Local energy operator

Batteries, subscriptions and technical support

Asset ownership, payments and service responsibilities

Site partner

Space, electricity and rider access

Installation permission, power capacity and operating hours

If the motorcycles are rented, include the lessor in decisions about adaptation, maintenance and battery subscriptions.

The project agreement should also assign fault response, rider support and responsibility for lost or damaged batteries. For multi-platform riders, confirm that the energy service fits their working arrangements without assuming exclusivity.

Qualify Demand, Compatibility and Station Access

Before selecting equipment, collect:

  • Rider numbers, daily distance, shift length and service mix.

  • Current energy, rental and routine maintenance costs.

  • Motorcycle models, battery specifications and adaptation authority.

  • Replenishment travel, queues and downtime.

  • Candidate sites, electricity supply and operating hours.

A removable battery is not automatically compatible with a shared swap network. Engineering checks should cover voltage, pack dimensions, connectors, mechanical retention, BMS communication and controller behaviour. HelloSwap's adaptation process addresses these interfaces across the motorcycle, battery, cabinet and software.

Swapping is worth evaluating when charging interrupts productive work and stations can serve recurring routes. Reliable overnight charging may remain sufficient for lower-intensity riders.

Size the initial deployment using peak swap demand, charged-battery inventory and charging replenishment time—not rider count alone. Compare the full cost of the motorcycle-and-energy arrangement, then assess replenishment time, service reliability and paid retention before expanding.
